Meeting The Needs Of Both Present & Future Generations

“the literature on sustainability emphasizes the two aspects of equity: intergenerational and intragenerational equity. Both aspects are significant for social sustainability. Intergenerational equity refers to fairness in allocating resources between current and future generations.” – Efrat Eizenberg & Yosef Jabareen

The second aspect of Just sustainability is meeting the needs of both present and future generations. This aspect is unique to the other 3 because it is built upon by them. To simplify, if we do not see an improvement in the quality of life, if we do not see justice and equity in terms of recognition, if we are not living within ecosystem limits, then we are not meeting the needs of present and future generations. Efrat Eizenberg & Yosef Jabareen quote “the literature on sustainability emphasizes the two aspects of equity: intergenerational and intragenerational equity. Both aspects are significant for social sustainability. Intergenerational equity refers to fairness in allocating resources between current and future generations.” By meeting the needs of this current generation, we are creating a sustainable structure on this earth for the generations that will proceed us.

Sustainable housing in Austin Texas has a huge effect on this aspect. By using sustainable practices in their buildings, they are preserving the earths resources, and by projects such as Community First! village, they are creating equal opportunities for improvement in the quality of life for all homeless people no matter what you race, gender, or identity is. All this together is the definition of meeting the needs of present and future generations.
